Biomanufacturing for Regenerative Medicine and Disease Modeling

Liqun Ning

The Biomanufacturing for Regenerative Medicine and Disease Modeling Lab addresses critical challenges in healthcare and biomedicine through the development and integration of cutting-edge technologies in advanced manufacturing, biomaterials, and biology. Our research focuses on creating living bioengineered constructs, devices, and systems to investigate fundamental mechanisms of tissue regeneration following injury and the progression of human diseases. These engineered platforms are further used to evaluate and identify potential therapeutic strategies for clinical applications. Equally important, the lab serves as an interdisciplinary training platform, providing students in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Biology, and related fields with hands-on research experience at the interface of engineering and medicine.

Complex Flows and Advanced Transport Lab (CFTLAB)

Mustafa Usta

The Complex Flows and Advanced Transport Lab develops the transport physics of flow-responsive systems, where flow actively reorganizes the medium through which it moves. The lab pursues two interconnected research programs: hemodynamics-driven transport and activation of macromolecules, cells, and bioengineered particles in biological and engineered flow systems; and transport across flow-coupled functional surfaces, including separative, stimuli-responsive, and catalytic interfaces. Combining high-fidelity computation and scientific machine learning, the lab builds physical frameworks that govern how flow history shapes macromolecular activation, cellular damage, surface-mediated separation, and mixing across environments ranging from physiological to high-speed compressible flows. Research is supported by the Department of Energy and conducted in collaboration with partners across biomedical engineering, materials science, national laboratories, and industry.

Integrated Modeling for Energy, Resiliency, and Sustainability (IERS)

Navid Goudarzi

The Center for Integrated Modeling for Energy, Resiliency and Sustainability is a collaborative multidisciplinary effort between the departments of Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering & Computer Science, and Teacher Education at Cleveland State University. We are facing a wide range of grand challenges across the world, such as the continuous increase of energy demand, degraded natural resources, aging population and infrastructure, and more frequent extreme weather and climate conditions. These high-impact events involve complex system approaches of investigation for scientific solutions.

M³TFluiD Lab (Multiscale Multiphysics Modeling and Data-Driven Thermofluids)

Navid Goudarzi

The M³TFluiD Lab develops multi-fidelity surrogate modeling (MFSM) approaches integrating CFD and physics-informed machine learning to study thermo-fluid transport across applications, including wind engineering, hazard mitigation, integrated energy systems, advanced air mobility (AAM), and air quality and dispersion. The lab emphasizes system-of-systems analysis supported by validation, verification, and uncertainty quantification (VVUQ) and enables scalable digital twin frameworks for complex engineering environments. Through collaboration within the IERS Center, this work contributes to interdisciplinary research in energy systems, infrastructure resiliency, and sustainable built and natural environments.

The Sikder Lab

Prabaha Sikder

At Sikder Lab, our mission is to develop cutting-edge regenerative medicine therapies that restore lost tissues and regain functionality. We focus on treating orthopedic, musculoskeletal, spinal, and dental defects, leveraging advanced biomaterials and patient-specific implant design to drive innovation in tissue regeneration. Our expertise lies in engineering and validating multi-functional biomaterials and stimuli-responsive “smart” implants that actively enhance the regenerative cascade. By integrating additive and advanced manufacturing techniques, we create next-generation implants tailored to individual patient needs, promoting faster and more effective tissue repair for bone, skeletal muscle, and gum regeneration.
