Shaping Players and People: A Conversation with Fighting Game Head Coach Austin "Saucetin" Cioce
CLEVELAND – Cleveland State University Esports recently sat down with Austin "Saucetin" Cioce, the Head Coach of the program's fighting game team, to learn more about his background, coaching philosophy, and the incredible work he does for the players.
Cioce, who currently focuses on the team's Street Fighter 6 roster, brings a wealth of competitive knowledge to the CSU lab. When he isn't hard at work practicing with the squad, he spends his rare free time painting, writing, and cooking.
In a December interview conducted by team captain Gabby Palmer, Coach Austin outlined his unique, holistic approach to player development.
"My approach to teaching our players starts with a wide range of game theory, logic-based decision-making, and life habits that compound into long-term results," Cioce explained. "My goal is to not only produce strong players but also strong people who can apply the skills they learn in the lab to greater aspects of their lives."
To achieve this, his role extends far beyond standard gameplay review. Coach Austin's day-to-day responsibilities include leading team lectures, organizing events, and networking with local talent to ensure CSU remains deeply connected to the regional esports scene.
Despite having competed in fighting games for more than 15 years, Cioce's proudest achievements aren't the ones found in a trophy case. For him, the legacy of the local community and the bonds formed along the journey carry the most weight.
"If I'm being honest, my medals at home don't hold their weight in gold when compared to the memories of the friends who shared in my journey of competition," he shared. "Looking back, our region's history is deeply connected to the people who passionately joined forces to build something beautiful. Being a part of that legacy now and contributing to growing the next generation of players really rings true to my biggest achievement so far."
As Coach Austin succinctly summarized his feelings about the program: "I love my team!"
The CSU Esports program wishes Coach Austin the best of luck in the upcoming season and thanks him for letting the community into his world!
