Bachelor of Science in Data Science
Program Description
The Bachelor of Science in Data Science (BSDS) program at Cleveland State University equips students with the knowledge and skills to turn data into meaningful insights. This interdisciplinary program integrates statistics, computer science, and domain-specific knowledge, preparing graduates to meet the growing demand for data science professionals across various industries.
Data science plays a crucial role in almost all areas of expertise thanks to the explosive growth in data availability. Graduates work in careers in companies and government to use various quantitative tools to extract useful information from complex data and help them make well-informed and evidence-based decisions.
The Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates Ohio has high employments for Data Scientists, with 5,510 employed as of 2024. There is great demand for Data Scientists, as the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 34% increase from 2024-2034, significantly faster than average for all occupations.
The BSDS program emphasizes a strong foundation in data science, covering essential topics such as data analytics, machine learning, statistical modeling, and data visualization. Students engage in a curriculum that combines theoretical knowledge with practical applications, preparing them to handle and analyze large datasets effectively. Advanced courses provide specialized training in fields like artificial intelligence, big data processing, and database systems, offering students the opportunity to tailor their education to their career interests.
Students in the BSDS program have unique opportunities to engage in research through initiatives like the Undergraduate Summer Research Award Program. Students also have opportunities to work alongside faculty on cutting-edge research projects. These projects span areas including machine learning, artificial intelligence, data analytics, and quantum computing, providing valuable hands-on experience in high-demand fields.
Major Requirements
The BSDS degree requires a minimum of 120 credit hours, including foundational courses in mathematics, computer science, and statistics, as well as specialized data science coursework. In their senior year, students complete a capstone project, where they apply their skills to a significant data science problem, often in collaboration with industry partners.
Students in the Bachelor of Science in Data Science are required to take courses in Mathematics, Science, Engineering Science, Data Ethics, and Statistics. We have provided degree maps for a 4-year calculus entry, a 4-year pre-calculus entry, and a 5-year pre-calculus entry.
Honors Program/University Scholars
Students in the Honors or University Scholars programs are required to complete an Honors Thesis (three credit hours, minimum) and at least six (6) credit hours of honors courses in the Computer Science Department. General guidelines for these credit hours are listed in the catalog. However, the specific courses that each student takes will be agreed upon by the student, the department’s undergraduate advisor, and the student’s honors thesis advisor. The student’s regular undergraduate advisor is responsible for finding an honors thesis advisor who is mutually agreeable to the undergraduate advisor, the honors thesis advisor, and the honors student.
