Program Description

The Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Design degree prepares students for careers in User Experience and User Interface Design (UX/UI) without the need for additional graduate or professional education. The Computer Science and Design major involves designing, researching and programming technological interfaces and products in a way that is easy and intuitive for people to adapt to and use.

Computer science courses cover the analysis, design and implementation of information and computing systems. Design courses integrate software skills with creative decision-making as well as integrating human perspective into the design process.


An integrated Computer Science and Design degree prepares students for careers in: 

  • User experience design (UX)/design research
  • User interface design (UI)
  • Interaction design (IxD)
  • Web Designer
  • Programming
  • Web/mobile app development
  • Motion/animation
  • 3D modeling
  • Data analyst
  • Computer system analyst
  • Related fields that include extended reality technologies (virtual reality, augmented reality and mixed reality).

The Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates Ohio has high employments for Web Developers and Digital Designers, with 1,940 employed as of 2024. There is great demand for Web Developers and Digital Designers, as the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 7% increase from 2023-2033, faster than average for all occupations.

The Computer Science and Design major involves designing, researching, and programming technological interfaces and products in a way that is easy and intuitive for people to adapt to and use. The Computer Science curriculum covers the analysis, design, and implementation of information and computing systems. The Design curriculum integrates software skills with creative decision-making as well as integrating human perspective into the design process. The curriculum involves core topics in computer science, design, mathematics, and engineering.

Major Requirements

Degree candidates must attain a cumulative grade-point average of at least 2.00 (C or better) for all work and at least 2.00 for all required courses - including technical electives - in the combined areas of engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics, and chemistry. We have provided a degree map below.

Honors Program

Honors students are required to complete:

  • at least 12 of their upper-level course credits as designated Honors credits
  • CIS 495H - Honors Research (3 credits) or ART 450 - Design Capstone (contract course)

Enrollment in CIS 495H or ART 450 should be approved by an advisor in either Computer Science or Design.
