Our History

The Advanced Manufacturing Center builds upon a legacy that began more than 40 years ago. Today, AMC’s mission of bringing together education, research, and industry to strengthen manufacturing in Northeast Ohio is still the same as its previous chapter.

The Beginning

The original AMC began in 1984 as a partnership between Cleveland State and the Cleveland Advanced Manufacturing Program (CAMP). From the start, the AMC served as the connection from the classroom to the industry. Local manufacturers partnered with the AMC to improve manufacturing processes and solve complex engineering challenges. Faculty, graduate researchers, and undergraduate students worked with industry professionals on projects to give practical solutions, as well as valuable real-world experience.

Throughout its history, the AMC collaborated with many of Northeast Ohio’s leading organizations, such as NASA’s Lewis Research Center, Ford Motor Company, Parker Hannifin Corporation, AmeriTrust, Mr. Coffee, Malley’s Chocolates, and Sterling Manufacturing. These partnerships allowed the center to connect to real manufacturing challenges and make impacts on regional industry.

A Legacy of AMC's Mission

Former Administrative Coordinator, Joanne Hundt, who spent many years at the original AMC, recalls the central mission: student involvement. About 75 students worked in the facility, and each one had the opportunity to collaborate with the faculty, CAMP engineers, industry partners, and manufacturing projects.

Students were able to gain experience with operating equipment such as CNC machines, mills, and drill presses while directly learning from professionals in the manufacturing field. This machine shop allows students to develop the confidence and skills to thrive in a manufacturing career.

The connections that were built at the AMC are strong. Many of them last to this day!
