Welcome to Civil and Environmental Engineering

Civil engineers design and supervise the construction of roads, buildings, airports, tunnels, dams, bridges, and water supply and sewage systems. Civil engineering, considered one of the oldest engineering disciplines, encompasses many specialties, and overall job opportunities consistently remain strong and starting salaries are among the highest of all college graduates.

Civil and environmental engineers design and construct systems that communities depend on every day - from bridges and water networks to resilient infrastructure and sustainable cities. The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at CSU prepares undergraduate and graduate students to solve these challenges through course offerings, hands-on research, fieldwork, and partnerships with industry leaders across the Pittsburgh region and beyond. Our students take full advantage of opportunities offered by the Department to help them to gain technical depth and real-world experience to make them have an immediate impact on our society.

The Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET. It is one of many accredited undergraduate programs offered by the Washkewicz College of Engineering. Please refer to the College's statement of accreditation.

Our program offers the following subdisciplines:

Environmental Engineering involves sustainable design for the control and protection of the environment and its resources. Environmental engineers design systems for water quality and treatment, wastewater treatment, hazardous waste management and treatment and control of air pollutants.

Environmental Engineering

Geotechnical Engineering encompasses the areas of soil mechanics and foundation engineering. It is concerned with design and construction of structures built on or below the ground surface and the physical characteristics of soil and rocks or composite material. Geotechnical engineering includes the design of foundations of bridges and buildings, design of tunnels and dams, and the geological factors affecting all structures.

Structural Engineering includes the design of all types of structures including buildings, dams, bridges and tunnels, and the monitoring of their construction. A primary concern of structural engineers is predicting the loads that a structure will have to resist during its life and ensuring that it will be both safe and useful.

Structural Engineering

Transportation Engineering deals with the planning, design, construction and operation of highways, railways, air transportation systems, and their terminals.  Transportation engineers are involved in the total transportation system, including the planning, design, implementation, administration, management, and performance evaluation. Highway engineering and traffic engineering are subfields of transportation engineering that involve highway design, traffic operations, and highway safety.

Transportation Engineering

Water Resources Engineering involves flood control, harbor and river development and water quantity management. It also includes hydrology, which encompasses the occurrence, distribution, movement and properties of the waters of the Earth and their environmental relationships.

Water Resource Engineering

Construction Management equips students with the skills and knowledge to lead in a rapidly evolving construction industry. With a strong emphasis on industry collaboration and digital construction technologies, this program prepares forward-thinking professionals who can thrive in the modern construction landscape.

Rural Safe Efficient Advanced Transportation Center (R-SEAT)

CSU is part of the Rural Safe Efficient Advanced Transportation Center (R-SEAT) under the leadership of Dr. Emmanuel Kinando, Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. He is one of the Associate Directors of Technology Transfer for R-SEAT.

Dr. Josiah Owusu-Danquah, also an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at CSU, is one of the Principal Investigators of the Center.
