BIM Lab

Building Information Modeling (BIM) Laboratory

The Digital Hub of the Construction Management Program and Project Delivery Institute

The Building Information Modeling (BIM) Laboratory serves as the technological and collaborative centerpiece of the Construction Management Program and the Project Delivery Institute @ CSU . More than a teaching laboratory, the BIM Lab is a dynamic multidisciplinary ecosystem where students, faculty, researchers, and industry partners come together to explore, develop, and apply innovative approaches to planning, designing, constructing, operating, and managing the built environment.

The laboratory supports the entire educational journey of Construction Management students, from introductory digital construction concepts to advanced multidisciplinary senior design and research projects, while providing a collaborative environment for applied research, workforce development and skills training, and industry engagement.

Equipped with industry standard software and emerging technologies, including Autodesk Revit, Autodesk Forma, Autodesk Construction Cloud, Autodesk Navisworks, Autodesk Site Design & Simulation, Procore, Primavera P6, Visualization platforms, Simulation tools, and Virtual and Augmented Reality (VR/AR), the BIM Lab provides students with hands-on experience using the digital workflows that are transforming the architecture, engineering, construction (AEC) industry.

To maximize collaboration, interdisciplinary learning, and research synergies, the BIM Laboratory shares the space of the Center for Integrated Modeling for Energy, Resiliency and Sustainability within the Washkewicz College of Engineering at CSU. This shared environment creates a unique innovation hub where expertise in digital construction, sustainable infrastructure, energy systems, resilient communities, advanced modeling, and data driven decision making can converge. The co-location encourages faculty, students, and industry professionals from multiple disciplines to collaborate on complex challenges that extend beyond traditional construction management and into the broader built environment.

As the innovation hub of the Project Delivery Institute, the BIM Lab fosters an integrated ecosystem connecting education, research, workforce development, and industry practice. Students collaborate with faculty affiliates and industry mentors to address real-world challenges proposed by owners, contractors, designers, public agencies, community organizations, and technology partners. Many of these collaborations begin through the CM/PDI Summer Co-op Program and mature into multidisciplinary senior design projects, undergraduate research, graduate studies, and industry-sponsored initiatives.

The BIM Lab also serves as a catalyst for workforce development by supporting experiential learning, professional training, certification preparation, continuing education, and industry workshops. Through the Project Delivery Institute's Industry & Community Insights Series, guest lectures, collaborative research, and applied project experiences, students gain direct exposure to current industry challenges while helping industry partners explore emerging technologies, innovative project delivery methods, sustainability strategies, and solutions for complex capital projects.

By integrating digital technologies with experiential learning, interdisciplinary collaboration, and strong university–industry partnerships, the BIM Laboratory creates a vibrant ecosystem that prepares future leaders in construction management, civil engineering, and the broader built environment. The laboratory serves as a platform where education inspires research, research informs practice, and industry partnerships accelerate innovation, advancing workforce development, sustainable infrastructure, resilient communities, and economic growth throughout Northeast Ohio and beyond.
