Why are we holding the Summit?

We believe the most meaningful advances in human-machine systems begin with strong community partnerships. The Center for Human-Machine Systems remains committed to working alongside individuals with lived disability experience, community organizations, healthcare providers, educators, and researchers to shape the future of assistive and rehabilitation technologies.

The theme for the 2026 CHMS Summit is Connecting Research and Community. The Summit will highlight the many ways CHMS students, faculty, and community partners collaborate through research, service, and community engagement. By bringing together academic and community voices, we aim to strengthen existing partnerships, foster new collaborations, and advance research that improves lives throughout Northeast Ohio and beyond.

Who is hosting the summit?

The Center for Human-Machine Systems (CHMS) at Cleveland State University is proud to host the annual CHMS Summit. Through the Summit, CHMS brings together students, faculty, researchers, community organizations, healthcare providers, industry partners, and individuals with lived disability experience to strengthen partnerships and advance community-engaged research.

Who will particiapate in the summit?

The Summit is by invitation only.  The 2026 Summit will bring together CSU faculty and students in our Human-Machine Systems Traineeship with our existing partners with lived disability experience, local social service providers to people with disabilities, and physical rehabilitation professionals.

How will the summit be run?

The Summit will feature a keynote address, a panel discussion, student presentations showcasing community-engaged research, and interactive small-group discussions focused on strengthening partnerships between the university and the communities we serve. Additional agenda details will be shared as the program develops.
