2022 REU Program

Why are we holding the Summit?

We want to transform the way we do research in human-machine systems.  As we grow our program, our new research directions will be driven by the disability communty.  We plan to hold the Summit annually to create connections between the disability community in Cleveland and our academic community at CSU.  Our vision is for those communities to become one community partnering to create life changing assistive and rehabilitation technologies.

The theme for the 2023 Summit is "Partnering for Research Education".  We invite the community of people with lived disability experience, health care providers, and social service providers to join us in designing and implementing our new graduate research traineeship program in human-machine systems.

What is the Summit all about?

The goals of the 2023 Summit are:

  1. Identify community partners with whom we can work to enhance our graduate research program.
  2. Define specific knowledge, skills, and attitudes our students need to successfully partner with the disability community.
  3. Identify the elements of partnerships that are attractive to members of the community.  Over the years many generous people have come to spend time with our students and even invited them into their homes.  What barriers exist to these types of interactions?  What might facilitate them?
  4. Define specifics of interactions between our students and the disability community.   We want to lay out how our students' immersion experiences in the disability can be facilitated.

Who is hosting the summit?

The Center for Human-Machine Systems is a research center at CSU that works across disciplines and partners with the disability community to develop life-changing assistive and rehabilitation technologies.  The center runs a new graduate research traineeship program in human-machine systems.  The Center for Human-Machine Systems' students, faculty, and community partners are inviting you to join us in designing our new graduate program.   Check out our planning committee page for more infomation on who we are.

Who will particiapate in the summit?

The Summit is by invitation only.  The 2023 Summit will bring together CSU faculty and students in our Human-Machine Systems Traineeship with our existing partners with lived disability experience, local social service providers to people with disabilities, and physical rehabilitation professionals.

How will the summit be run?

The Summit will center around small group discussions focused on the four goals above and include open spaces for furthering these discussions.  Check back here as we build the Summit agenda.
