Winter 2017 Commencement Ceremony

One hundred three ECE students received university degrees at the 2017 Commencement Ceremony at the Bert L. and Iris S. Wolstein on December 17, 2017. They are 71 graduate (1 DRE, 21 MCIS, 44 MSEE, and 5 MSSE) and 32 undergraduate students (11 BSCIS, 1 BSCS, 13 BEE and 7 BCE). Congratulations!

Mr. Dave Guinther recently received CSU's Alumni Recognition Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service

Mr. Dave Guinther recently received CSU's Alumni Recognition Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service. He not only received an electrical engineering degree from CSU, he was also co-captain of the swim team in the 60s. Mr. Seyed Fakoorian, a MSEE student (faculty advisor: Dr. Dan Simon), receives the Outstanding Master's Thesis Award. Our BSCS student, Michael M D'Arcy received the Computing Research Association's (CRA) Outstanding Undergraduate Researcher Award

 

Our BSCS student, Michael M D'Arcy, was selected for honorable mention for the Computing Research Association's (CRA) Outstanding Undergraduate Researcher Award, which is the most prestigious undergraduate for computer science students. Prof. Wenbing Zhao's research has received $100,000 in commercialization acceleration funding

 

Prof. Wenbing Zhao's research has been selected for the TeCK Fund in commercialization acceleration funding. Dr. Zhao will continue to develop his Privacy Aware Compliance Tracking System (PACTS) to ensure best practices are followed by nurses and patient handlers in elder care settings. CSU recently completed the first test of its transfemoral prosthesis with an amputee at the VA Medical Center

The prosthesis provided motorized knee actuation to replicate able-bodied gait while consuming net-zero energy due to supercapacitor-based energy regeneration. The prosthesis project is funded by the NSF and is led by Dr. Dan Simon, Dr. Hanz Richter, and Dr. Antonie van den Bogert.

Congratulations to Seyed Fakoorian for receiving the CSU Outstanding Master's Thesis Award

Seyed completed his master's thesis, "Ground reaction force estimation in prosthetic legs with an extended Kalman filter," in December 2016. He is currently a doctoral student in the ECE Department. Seyed's thesis research could provide a key component to making prosthetic legs more practical, less expensive, and better performing than current technology.

Congratulations to Saman Khademi for receiving the CSU Excellent Achievement Award in Research

Saman is a doctoral student in the ECE Department. He has shown that it is possible to achieve prosthetic walking that is similar to that of able-bodied persons, while regenerating electrical energy in a manner similar to that used in electric and hybrid cars. Saman's research could play a significant role in improving the lives of thousands of above-knee amputees. He has also provided theoretical advances in artificial intelligence and machine learning, which he has used in his prosthetics research.

Prof. Dan Simon and his students won 2nd place in the Undergraduate Student Poster Competition at IMECE

Alonte Garnett, a computer engineering student at CSU, and David Maher, a biomedical engineering student at Duquesne University, won second place in the Undergraduate Student Poster Competition at the International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition (IMECE) in Tampa, Florida, in November 2017. Their poster was about their summer 2017 research on pediatric exoskeleton technology, and was supervised by CSU doctoral student Curt Laubscher, Mechanical Engineering Professor Jerzy Sawicki, and ECE Professor Dan Simon.

The first ECE Distinguished Speaker Series -- Smart Cities

ECE Department and IEEE Cleveland co-sponsored the Smart City presentation as the first ECE Distinguished Speaker Series at Main Classroom 201. The speaker is Dr. Mohammad Shahidehpour, who is the Bodine Chair Professor, Illinois Institute of Technology and a member of National Academy of Engineering. This presentation introduces the components and the structures embedded in smart cities and discuss the benefits and the predicaments of implementing smart cities for promoting the global sustainability. An overview of a campus microgrid established at the IIT campus is also presented. There were about 70 people attended from institutions and industry in the region as well as CSU community.

Prof. Dan Simon and his two doctoral students won the 1st place award at the Washkewicz College of Engineering's Annual Research Day

Prof. Dan Simon and his two doctoral students, Hanieh Mohammadi and Gholamreza Khademi, received the 1st place award at the Washkewicz College of Engineering's Annual Research Day on October 27.  The title of the research poster is "Toward Minimal-Sensing Activity Mode Recognition for Transfemoral Amputees", which was selected among a record number of almost 50 poster presentations. Congratulations!

Profs. Zhiqiang Gao and Lili Dong held 2017 IEEE 1st Workshop on Active Disturbance Rejection Control (ADRC)

Dr. Zhiqiang Gao and Dr. Lili Dong organized 2017 IEEE 1st Workshop on Active Disturbance Rejection Control (ADRC) on Aug. 10-11, 2017. The workshop was attended by about 30 people, from universities and companies in the U.S., Canada, and China. Opening remarks was given by Prof. Karlsson, the dean of engineering college at CSU. During the workshop, the historical review, theoretical development, and practical applications of ADRC were presented and discussed. At the end, the audiences came away with in-depth understanding of ADRC in terms of its design principles, the theoretical justification, and real-world applications.

A number of students participate in summer research with ECE faculty. Sujay Bajracharya and Alexander Rhodes will research with Dr. Zhang on voice control in robots. James Doherty, Mike M. D'arcy and Emre Hatay will research with Dr. Fazli on Robot Navigation in Dynamic Environments. Utkarsh Patel, Mayur Rumalwala, and Andrew Yu will research with Dr. Chung on Document similarity, Automatic Image Identification System and Basketball analytics, respectively. Congratulations!

Prof. Hongxing Ye received a grant from NSF

Prof. Hongxing Ye has been awarded a grant from NSF for his project "Transactive Uncertainty and Flexibility for High Penetration of Semi-dispatchable Renewables in Electricity Markets." Dr. Ye's research focuses on improving the reliability and fairness of the electricity market as variable energy resources (VERs), such as solar and wind, become more prevalent in the power generation landscape. The robust model that he is developing will actively manage the uncertainties of demand by users and supply by VER generators. By managing uncertainties and including explicit energy pricing signals, Dr. Ye's model has the potential to enable broader adoption of distributed renewable energy sources.

Alumni Mr. Richard Veres shares his story on youtube

Mr. Richard Veres graduated from Fenn College in 1956, the predecessor of Cleveland State University, with a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering. However, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and never had a chance to walk in the commencement with his classmates. 61 years later, the 84-year-old had that chance to walk across the stage at CSU. ECE has 179 student graduated in May 13, 2017

One hundred seventy nine ECE students received university degrees at the 2017 Commencement Ceremony at the Bert L. and Iris S. Wolstein on May 13, 2017. They are 115 graduate (43 MCIS, 66 MSEE, and 6 MSSE) and 63 undergraduate degrees (20 BSCIS, 1 BSCS, 28 BEE and 14 BCE). In addition, Mr. Dragos Dinca recevied his Doctor of Engineering degree with the dissertation entitled "Development of an Integrated High Energy Density Capture and Storage System for Ultrafast Supply/Extended Energy Consumption Applications". Congratulations!

HKN Induction Ceremony

HKN Epsilon Alpha Chapter at CSU held induction ceremony in Compton Lounge between 5:30pm and 6:30pm on April 14, 2017. Fifteen outstanding undergraduate and graduate students were initiated. The faculty adviser Dr. Lili Dong and HKN student officers (Yang Zhao, Prasanth Kandula, Brian Squirek, Mallory Bartolovich, and Jamal Odeh) organized this event, which was followed by a reception in Fox Den. The initiates and their guests enjoyed the ceremony and reception. Congratulations on these new members!

Congrats to Prof. Ye Zhu's invention

Prof. Ye Zhu and the Technology Transfer Office (TTO) are currently processing a patent application for a novel login process using a 3D authentication method. Dr. Zhu's invention, Authentication Method Using Interactive Three-Dimensional Environments, discloses methods in which a user interacts with virtual three-dimensional environments to authenticate themselves on a mobile device or similar electronic device. Congrats to Prof. Charles Alexander for Award

Prof. Charles Alexander received the Robert S. Walleigh Distinguished Contributions to Engineering Professionalism Award. This award is to honor members of the engineering profession for long-term dedicated effort and outstanding accomplishments in advancing the aims of IEEE professional activities in the United States. 2017 CSU High School Programming Competition

Prof. Zhao led Visual programming competition during the Engineering Scholars Day on March 4. Two batches of sixteen prospective high school students participated the code.org competition. Three of the students were able to solve 2 puzzles and moved on to the third puzzle. A total five students received the awards. Congratulations!

Prof. Lili Dong, Ms. Sandra English (Manager, co-op program) and five CS students attended OCWIC 2017 (Ohio Celebration of Women in Computing) conference held in THE LODGE at Sawmill Creek Resort on February 22-23, 2017.
